This photographic opportunity presents itself once in a year when the moon descends at the right angle after the sun and no clouds are obstructing die view. Even though only a small crescent is illuminated by the sun, the full moon circle is visible because the earth reflects sunlight onto the night side of the moon. This is called earthshine.
